Mother Nature is a tease, especially when it comes to weather, and it just so happens to be that time of year when she often tricks us. Last week for example, Wednesday was sunny and warm but temperatures dropped into the teens on Thursday and it snowed.

With that in mind, if you have the urge to get out and explore or commune with nature, it's probably smart to stay rather than stray too far from home. You're in luck if you happen to live in the Mid-Valley as there are plenty of nature's treasures along the back roads of Emma, Basalt and El Jebel.

Here are some flashes from “the Pan,” “escape goats” and relics of the past to reflect on practically right outside your own door.
